Organize Google Ads Into Simple Ad Groups

July 14, 2026

In Google Ads, ad groups are folders for related keywords and ads. When everything sits in one giant pile, Google cannot match messages well, and you cannot learn what worked.

A clean ad group lets you write headlines that fit the whole set of keywords. A messy ad group forces vague ads that sort of fit everything and perfectly fit nothing.

A beginner structure

  • One campaign for one business goal
  • Separate ad groups for separate themes
  • A few tightly related keywords in each group
  • Ads that use the same language as those keywords

Keep the first account small enough that you can explain it to a friend in two minutes. If the explanation needs a whiteboard, simplify before you scale spend.

Example

Group A: “website setup help.” Group B: “Google Ads management packages.” Different themes, different pages, different ads. Someone searching for setup help should not land on a vague page that also tries to sell advanced retainers in the same breath without context.

How many keywords?

There is no magic number, but beginners do well with a short list of close variants around one idea. If you need dozens of unrelated terms to feel “complete,” you probably need more groups, not a longer list.

Naming and maintenance

  • Name ad groups after the theme, not after the date
  • Pause orphan groups that no longer match an offer
  • Clone a winner carefully instead of overloading it
  • Review search terms per group, not only at campaign level

If you cannot explain the theme of an ad group in one short phrase, split it. Clear folders make clear ads, and clear ads make cleaner learning for a new website owner.

A cleanup pass for messy first attempts

Many beginners launch one giant ad group, then feel lost. That is fixable. Export or list your keywords, cluster them into themes on paper, create new ad groups for each cluster, and move keywords over carefully. Rewrite ads so each group speaks its own language.

Expect a short learning bump after restructuring. Keep budgets modest while the new folders settle, and judge the change after enough search-term data returns.

Simple structure is a gift to weekly reporting. You will see winners and waste faster when each folder has one job.
