Google Ads Conversion Tracking: Know What Worked
In Google Ads, a conversion is the action you care about: a purchase, a lead form, a booked call. If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.
Tracking is how your ad account learns and how you learn. It connects spend to outcomes. Without that link, budget decisions become guesses dressed up as intuition.
Start with one conversion
Pick the action closest to revenue. For many new sites that is a contact form submit or a completed checkout. You can add secondary events later. One clean primary conversion beats five noisy ones on day one.
Confirm it fires
Submit a test lead yourself. Check that Google Ads or Analytics recorded it. Broken tracking is worse than no tracking because it teaches false lessons. If the tag fires twice, fix that too, or your results will look better than reality.
Name conversions clearly
Call the action “Contact form – main offer” instead of “Goal 1.” Clear names help when you return a month later or invite someone to help you.
Then optimize
Once tracking works, judge campaigns by cost per conversion and lead quality, not by clicks alone. Talk to leads. If cheap conversions are poor fits, tighten the message instead of celebrating the volume.
- Primary conversion chosen
- Test submission recorded
- Thank-you page or event verified
- Weekly review includes cost per conversion
Do not scale spend until tracking is trustworthy. Measurement is not paperwork. It is the flashlight you need before you walk further into paid traffic.
Hand-offs after the conversion
Tracking the click-to-form moment is necessary, not sufficient. Decide who replies, how fast, and what counts as a qualified lead after the human conversation. A campaign can look successful on conversions and still fail if nobody follows up.
Create a simple sheet: date, campaign or ad group, lead note, qualified yes or no. That sheet teaches faster than dashboards alone in month one.
When the sheet and the platform disagree, fix tracking before you trust either number completely.
