Google Ads Negative Keywords: Stop Wasted Spend Early

July 20, 2026

Negative keywords in Google Ads tell Google when not to show your ad. They are one of the fastest ways for beginners to protect a small budget.

Negatives are not pessimism. They are boundaries. Your offer cannot help everyone, and your ads should not pretend otherwise.

Common waste for new sites

  • free, cheap, torrent, pirate (if you sell paid work)
  • jobs, salary, hiring (if you are not recruiting)
  • DIY tutorial terms (if you only sell done-for-you)
  • wrong locations you cannot serve

Your list will differ by niche. A trainer may welcome “DIY” queries. A done-for-you agency may not. Build negatives from your business model, not from a generic scare list alone.

How to find them

Open search term reports weekly. Anything irrelevant becomes a negative. Anything highly relevant can become its own keyword. This review is one of the highest value habits in early Google Ads.

Start gentle, then tighten

Do not negative so aggressively that you block good buyers. Remove clear junk first. Be careful with broad negatives that might contain useful phrases. When unsure, note the term and watch it for another week before blocking.

Make it a ritual

  • Same day each week for search term review
  • Add negatives in batches with a short note why
  • Share the list if a teammate helps with ads
  • Revisit old negatives when your offer changes

Protected budgets learn faster. Negatives keep your instructions to Google honest, so the auction invites people you can actually help.

Shared lists vs campaign lists

As you grow, some negatives belong everywhere, like job-seeking terms if you never hire through ads. Other negatives belong only to one campaign. Keep that distinction so a block in one theme does not accidentally silence a different offer.

Re-read your negative list whenever you launch a new service. Yesterday’s junk query can become tomorrow’s product name, and a forgotten negative will hide it.

Waste prevention is ongoing editing, not a one-time purge on launch day.
