Google Ads Quality Score in Plain English

July 17, 2026

Google Ads Quality Score is Google’s rough grade for how relevant your keyword, ad, and landing page are together. Better relevance can mean better positions for less waste.

In plain terms, Google wants searchers to have a good experience. If your ad and page feel like a helpful answer, you tend to do better than a mismatched advertiser bidding on the same query.

The three pillars

  • Expected click-through rate: will people click this ad?
  • Ad relevance: does the ad match the keyword?
  • Landing page experience: is the page useful and clear?

Those pillars point to practical work: write clearer ads, keep keyword themes tight, and build pages that load well and say the right thing. No secret toggle replaces that work.

Beginner improvements

Tighten keyword themes, mirror key phrases in headlines, speed up the page, and remove pop-ups that block the offer. You do not need tricks. You need match. Also make sure the page is easy to use on a phone, because many clicks arrive there first.

What not to do

Do not stuff awkward keyword phrases into every sentence. Do not build doorway pages with no real help. Do not chase the score while ignoring lead quality. A pretty score on irrelevant traffic still wastes money.

A relevance routine

  • Group keywords by one theme
  • Write ads that sound like that theme
  • Send traffic to a page that continues the theme
  • Review search terms for mismatches weekly

Chase clarity, not the number itself. The number rises when the experience makes sense. For a new website, that mindset keeps you improving the parts customers actually feel.

Use the score as a hint, not a trophy

If a core keyword shows weak ad relevance, rewrite the ad around that theme. If landing page experience looks weak, fix speed, clarity, and navigation before you panic-bid higher. Bidding more on a mismatched experience usually buys more expensive disappointment.

When scores are mixed across a messy ad group, split the group. Scores often improve after themes become coherent because Google can finally evaluate a consistent idea.
